OSCiLLOT by Max for Cats

Insidiato, ma non messo in discussione, il primato di Ableton Live nel mondo della Empro militante, e della performance laptop-based, è stato recentemente confermato dall’alleanza stretta con Cycling ’74, che ha portato alla disponibilità di Max/MSP all’interno di Live, sotto forma di “ambiente parallelo” Max4Live. Oggi, Max for Cats sfrutta le capacità di programmazione low level per fornire una suite di moduli pre configurati, con cui assemblare le più personalizzabili strutture di sintesi. Benvenuti nell’era del modulare virtuale.

Praticamente impossibile da digitare senza incombere in errori grossolani, OSCiLLOT è una collezione di moduli, anzi un device assemblato in Max4Live, che possono essere usati dal musicista per fare tutto quello che si ritiene necessario; le connessioni avvengono attraverso cavi virtuali e non c’è altro da imparare se non una rapida panoramica delle funzioni “di genere”; poi, non rimane che tuffarsi nella programmazione…

Con 79 euro, dunque, passa la paura e si entra in possesso del pacchetto composto da un triplice device, 79 preset e un 1 Live Set. L’installazione richiede meno di 35 Mb e la presenza – ovvia – di Live 9 Standard con Max4Live.

Ci sono più di 100 moduli pronti all’uso e accompagnati da una corposa dotazione di Info per la consultazione immediata; il sistema supporta polifonia fino a sei voci simultanee, con personalizzazione dei patch cords dritti o curvati (o completamente nascosti); si può zoomare nella Editor Window, per controllare chi stia facendo cosa, per scrivere annotazioni e per salvare patches. Se il musicista si sente pronto alla sfida, può procurarsi un SKD (sofware development kit) con il quale intraprendere lo sviuppo di nuovi moduli ancora non compresi nel pacchetto. Se, nelle vicinanze, ci fosse un’interfaccia audio DC Coupled, sarà possibile usare OSCiLLOT per controllare apparecchiature esterne analogiche usando gli storici standard CV e Gate.

Come è facile immaginare, un sistema modulare è potente quanto è vasta la dotazione di circuiti previsti dai suoi sviluppatori; nel caso di OSCiLLOT, le cose partono da subito col piede giusto – anche se, e in proposito sono emerse alcune chiare indicazioni tra i commenti scambiati dai primi power users con gli sviluppatori… – c’è ancora diversa strada da fare.
